ARTIST PROFILE

SOLO EXHIBITIONS

I have exhibited photographic works in six solo shows and numerous group exhibitions since 1998. Much of my work is inspired by the world around us, both nature and the human environment, but I also create my own scenes.

I regard the medium as secondary to the images and the ideas, and prefer to be thought of as an artist who happens to be working with photography at the moment rather than as a "photographer".

Achieving a painterly look is a predominant concern in much of my work - without resorting to manipulation of the image beyond the camera. I am stubbornly resisting using computer technology to do the work for me, and enjoy the challenge of trying to achieve the results "in camera". My greatest satisfaction comes from hearing people refer to my pictures as paintings.

My work leans towards the abstract. This not only reflects the way I see things. On one level my delight in abstraction is the sheer visual pleasure of form, pattern, texture, colour and the play of light. More importantly, though, I aim to produce images with a sense of mystery which are open to different interpretations and emotional responses; images which provoke questions rather than provide answers; which intrigue the viewer and invite longer contemplation.
